Dunedin to host third Super League cricket tournament

Dunedin Super League is a knockout T20 cricket tournament, featuring eight teams, that will be played on 7 January 2023 at Kensington Oval, South Dunedin. In its third year now, the tournament has quickly become one of the most exciting cricket tournaments in Otago, attracting some of the most talented players and teams.
Starting in 2019 with eight teams, DSL this year has teams from South Island, Christchurch, Ashburton, Timaru, and Dunedin. In previous years, the tournament has teams from Greymouth, Nelson and Cromwell presenting.
While in the tournament's first year, SL Lions Dunedin won by beating HG Superchunkz Dunedin, last year United 11, Christchurch won the title.
The teams participating this year are:
- SL Lions, Dunedin
- The Black Dog Tuskers, Dunedin
- The Punters, Dunedin
- United 11, Christchurch
- Canterbury Pheonix, Christchurch
- Tigers 11, Timaru
- Yaari Club, Christchurch
- Blasters, Christchurch
Prize money for the winners this year will be $2000 and a trophy. The runner up will get $1000 and a trophy. There will be several trophies awarded for individual performances as well.
It will be another opportunity for Dunedin cricket lovers to watch teams and players from other famous leagues from Christchurch and Wellington.
Firoz and Binu, two individuals who are passionate about cricket, are behind the tournament. Their dedication to improving the league every year has helped to elevate the cricket super league to new heights.
Firoz said, “We would like to express our gratitude to the supporters and sponsors, True Value Cars and Total Assurance, who have assisted us and provided us with encouragement in organizing the tournament."
Binu says, “Our vision is to bring the cricket event to the next level. We plan to introduce franchise owners and player auctions like the Indian Premier League, and to attract top-level players to the tournament."
