For the love of ghazals

To promote Indian culture and arts in Aotearoa, the High Commission of India, Wellington and the Centre for Indian Performing Arts (CIPA), and the Auckland Indian Association (AIA) held an event at Mahatma Gandhi Hall. Aptly titled ‘Guldasta Ghazalon Ka,' the Sunday event was part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and was dedicated to the Indian diaspora in New Zealand.
The event, which had the presence of over 150 guests, saw singers Ankita Ghatani and Hemant, among others enthralling the audience with their soulful timeless ghazal renditions for around two hours.
Many distinguished personalities from the Indian community like Hon. Consul of India in Auckland Bhav Dhillon, Second Secretary (Press, Info and Culture) from the High Commission Durga Dass, President of the New Zealand Indian Central Association (NZICA) Narendra Bhana, and Bhartiya Samaj Chairperson Jeet Sachdev, among other community leaders marked their presence at the event.
Talking about the event, Dhansukh Lal, President, AIA, said, “It was overwhelming to see so many people turning up for the event. It was a hugely successful event that was well received and saw people enjoying themselves to the fullest. Since we had this event after the Covid pandemic restrictions, it was awesome to see members of the Indian diaspora enjoying and mingling with each other.”
Sharing his views about the event, Bhav Dhillon said, “Arts and culture are an integral part of our heritage and define who we are as Indians, and the diaspora support is invaluable.”
The guests were overjoyed to be part of this relaxed evening. One of the attendees, Dharmesh Parikh, said, "I thoroughly enjoyed being part of Guldasta Ghazalon ka. It was great to meet many beautiful friends and enjoy the talent of incredible singers and musicians."
