Anzac Day live updates: The nation remembers those who served

People have started to gather around the country at dawn services for the nation's day of commemoration for those who served.

Returned and Services Associations national president BJ Clark says the public are welcome to come into their local RSA and be part of remembrance events, and to chat to veterans.

Anzac Day, which was first held in 1916, honours more than 250,000 New Zealanders who have served overseas either in military conflicts or other roles, such as peacekeeping missions, says the Ministry for Culture and Heritage Te Pae Mahara manager Brodie Stubbs.

Pukeahu National War Memorial Park in Wellington is hosting both the Dawn Service and National Commemorative Service. The former is being broadcast live on both RNZ National and RNZ Concert from 6.02am and the latter will be carried live on RNZ National from 11am.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, National leader Christopher Luxon and Auckland mayor Phil Goff are among a small group of invited dignitaries joining veterans at the dawn service at Auckland Museum.

With the country now at the orange traffic light setting, members of the public are also able to attend although there will be no parade, due to the pandemic.
