Two Kiwi Indians in New Year's honours list

Auckland: Noted community workers of Indian origin, Harshad Patel and Gurmeeta Singh, are among the New Year's Honours List along with Thevarajan Arumugam, who hails from Sri Lanka.

All three have been awarded the Queens Service Medal for their contribution to the community. Mr Patel has been a tireless worker in the Indian community, being actively involved in the affairs of the Auckland Indian Association, the Mahatma Gandhi Centre and the New Zealand Indian Central Association (NZICA).

He is currently the president of the Auckland Indian Association and was elected the vice-president of NZICA, the largest and oldest organisation representing the Indian diaspora in New Zealand.

Gurmeeta Singh was born and raised in South Auckland and has been serving the community in her area for decades. Ms Singh has served in several government official positions and has been dedicated to community service.

Mr Arumugam receives the QSM for his services to the Tamil community.

Indian Weekender congratulates the three awardees and wishes them success in their continued efforts to serve the community.
