Senior Indian minister cancels NZ visit

Auckland: Senior Indian politician and Minister for Agriculture Sharad Pawar has cancelled his visit to New Zealand, Indian Weekender has reliably learned.
The veteran leader's visit was to coincide with the Kumar-Chitgopekar wedding being held in Auckland amid much fanfare in the first week of January, though it is not immediately known if Mr Pawar was to attend the wedding. Several Indian celebrities and politicians from India are billed to attend the wedding.
According to Indian Foreign Ministry sources, the visit was to be a private one with Mr Pawar having no official engagements.
Yet it is understood that the New Zealand government had planned to host a dinner for the senior minister during his brief stay in Auckland. Mr Pawar is believed to have cancelled his visit citing health reasons.
The Maharashtra politician is a senior figure in the Indian government and a major force on the country's political scene. As agriculture minister he would be a key figure in the proposed New Zealand-India free trade agreement, with agriculture likely to be a major concern in the FTA, especially from the Indian side.
