Covid-19 updates: Three Mt Eden prisoners test positive for Covid-19

Three people with Covid-19 have been in Auckland's Mount Eden Prison since the start of this month.

Corrections says two of the men tested positive before arriving in custody.

The third was a known associate of a positive case.

All three were immediately placed into quarantine, where they were treated by fully vaccinated staff wearing full PPE.

No Corrections staff or other people in prison are considered close contacts.

Two of the men remain in the quarantine area, while one is in hospital, being guarded by prison officers.

Meanwhile, a Covid-19 modeller says alert level restrictions in Auckland may need to be tightened again if cases jump quickly.

Auckland recorded 35 new cases today, 56 cases yesterday, up from 31 the day before, and less than 30 three times in the last week.

Modeller professor Michael Plank says the R-value - how much Covid is spreading - is likely about 1.2 or 1.3.

Plank told Morning Report if it gets to 1.5 cases could double every eight days.

He says it's clear the move to level 3 has resulted in an increase in cases.

Cabinet will decide today whether to change Covid-19 alert levels.

Critical decisions for Auckland today include whether schools go back when term 4 starts next week.

Last week the government announced a three-step plan for easing Auckland's alert level restrictions, before Northland moved to level 3 on Friday. Cabinet is reviewing the alert levels for all regions today.
