Diwali Festival returns to Auckland

All the colour, fun, food and excitement of Auckland’s largest Indian cultural festival returns to Aotea Square this weekend.

The Diwali Mela or Festival will this year feature a visiting dance and music group from Rajasthan and Indian master magician Uday Jadugar.

The Diwali Festival will be officially opened by the Governor General Sir Anand Satyanand.

Diwali is an ancient Hindu festival that marks the beginning of the Indian New Year. It is a time for celebration with families lighting lamps, candles and fireworks to symbolise the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil.

The Festival, which is held over two nights on Saturday October 30 and Sunday October 31, will conclude with a fireworks display. There will also be plenty of local performers and food stalls. Entry is free.

The Diwali Festival is supported by Auckland City, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, the Indian High Commission, Barfoot and Thompson and several other sponsors.
