PM lauds trust’s work, inclusiveness

Prime Minister John Key attended a special programme to kickstart the 21st Year Anniversary celebrations of the Nanaksar Trust.

He visited the Nanaksar Education Phulwari (the first community based childcare centre by an Indian charity in New Zealand) and spent some time with children and their parents. He appreciated the “inclusive” policy and promised support to promote the multicultural approach adopted by the centre.

He also visited the Nanaksar Sikh temple attending the Sunday service led by spiritual leader and Worldwide Chairman, Baba Amar Singh. The Prime Minister was honoured with a “siropa” – a robe of honour and a picture of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism.

Mr Key spoke about multiculturalism and its importance in today’s fast changing world. He also stated that in our evolving society and changing communities there could be issues but New Zealand is a mature society and together we can overcome any hurdles and concentrate towards positive progress.

Ethnic Affairs Minister Pansy Wong and Members of Parliament, Kanwaljit Bakshi and Cam Calder also attended.

Chairman, Baba Amar Singh ji offered to host the Prime Minister in India and also in the UK where the Nanaksar Trust is successfully running established educational institutions and pioneering projects for children in need.

The Nanaksar Trust has completed 21 Years of Service to the local community in Manukau and Auckland. Established in 1989, the Nanaksar Trust started primarily as religious charity and built the landmark Sikh Temple on Great South Road in Manurewa.

Over the years, understanding the needs of the growing community, the Trust took a proactive approach in providing customised solutions for the arising needs. It has been working in diverse areas with various government departments, Council offices, community organisations, schools and other charities to ensure that a collaborative approach is made in providing a better future for our communities.
