Gandhi centre comes alive with garba

For many years, the Auckland Indian Association has been celebrating Navratri, a festival encompassing 10 nights of celebrations dedicated to Amba Ma. The last night of Dassera celebrates victory of good over evil when Lord Ram kills Ravana. This victory is later celebrated as Diwali, when Ram returns to his kingdom of Ayodhya.

Over the 10 days, thousands of people from all over Auckland joined in the celebrations at the Mahatma Gandhi Centre. Four musicians/singers brought especially from India added zest to the evenings. Their lively music with well co-ordinated garba songs won the hearts of the participants. The music, songs, decoration, lighting and sound system created an enticing atmosphere and garbas were in full swing, with youngsters dancing tirelessly, often until the small hours of the morning.

The dance floor was glittering with colourful, traditional Indian costumes and some went the extra length and dressed in spectacular outfits. Our many sponsors supported us further by providing generous prizes every night for the best dancers and best costumes for children and adults.

As in the past, the catering committee prepared their well acclaimed delicious Indian snacks and chai to refuel the hungry and thirsty. The association has many committees and officers and volunteers from the Mandir, Catering, Social Club, Mahila Samaj, Senior Citizens, Membership, Entertainment, and Website committees knitted together for the preparations.

Diwali is another most popular festival celebrated by all Hindus. It is a very pleasant, joyous and happy occasion symbolising victory of good over evil, light over darkness. Every night we light the diyas and rekindle our beliefs to remove the darkness from our hearts and bring light into our lives.
