Probasee Durgotsav celebrated with gusto

Probasee Bengalee Association of NZ celebrated its 19th Sabojonin Durgotsav from 15-17 October at Onehunga High School in Auckland.

Though settlers from India came to New Zealand more than a century back, Indians of Bengal origin started settling down in 1980s. The Bengali community celebrated the first NZ Sarbojonin Durgotsav in 1992.

With increase in number of families, Probasee Bengalee Association came into being in 1998 and this festival, the most important for Bengalis all over the world, became an annual feature of the association.

The main feature of the cultural programme of Durgotsav- this year, was “Agomoni”, welcoming Goddess through chanting of slokas, songs and dances. A large number of children, youths and adults worked together to produce a delightful programme of high quality that drew appreciation and praise from the large gathering.

People from many communities besides Probasee members gathered to enjoy Puja and the cultural programmes during the festival. Everybody was provided with lunches and dinners at the Puja venue.
Pallab Banerjee , President, Probasee Bengalee Association said it was heartening to see people from diverse religions and ethnicities coming together to celebrate this festival which transcends ethnic boundaries.

“We teach our children and youth who are growing up in New Zealand not to forget their roots, rather, to feel proud of our rich heritage. We teach our people to live in perfect harmony with people of other religion, ethnicity, language and culture,” he added.
