Girls' night out in Hamilton

It was a festive time for the Waikato Punjabi Ladies’ Cultural Committee in Hamilton recently.
The committee presented its annual 11th Tia da Mela/Festival for Daughters at a grand female only function on October 9.
The committee members - Mindy Singh, Raj Mundi, Jaswinder Dhaliwal, Balbinder Sharma and Brinder Saraan - would like to extend a thank you to all those attended and made this Tian da Mela/Festival for Daughters such a success.
“To all the talented artists who brought the Punjabi Culture to the stage, brought back memories, we are forever indebted to you,” said Mindy Singh, senior committee member.
This festival, an original from the Punjab and as the name suggests it is a female funtion only: A ladies’ night out.
In Punjab, it is celebrated in the August month when the crops have been harvested and the new ones sown. Hence the married women are able to travel to the village of their birth to relax and meet up with their family and friends, to have a gossip session and talk of their grieviences, about their in laws.
They work off steam through their demostration of gidha boliyan and bhangra. Waikato Punjabi Ladies Cultural Committee once again supported The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation: Per ticket, a donation of a $1 was made towards the Breast Cancer Foundation.
Evening began with dinner and mingle, presentation of cultural items, presented by talented Punjabi artists from the local and wider community. Raffles were also drawn.
The evening ended with everyone joining in with the bhangra, and the promise of a return to Tian 2011.
