More than 4000 kites will be soaring this Saturday, January 16 from the Eastdale Reserve in Avondale, Auckland at the annual great Indian Kite Festival.
One of the most anticipated public events of the year that takes place on the occasion of Indian festival Makarsankranti will see at least 8000 people drop in at the reserve to fly kites.
Kite Festival is a big part of Makarsankranti which is observed in western India. It also symbolises the day of harvest and praying for the peace and prosperity of the community.
The Kite Festival in New Zealand is being organised for over a decade by Vaishnav Parivar (NZ) Inc. who arrange a whole day of festivities at the reserve and invite community members and kite enthusiasts to fly their kites in an open blue-windy sky.
The event will have at least 5000-7000 kites on sale and flying thread, and spinners for the public. The event will also have cultural activities during day time, various snacks and beverage stalls, and lucky draws at the end of the day.
“We will send raffle tickets like every year and the big prize this year is iPhone 12, and several other small attractive prizes for the participants.
“We have garba dance, Bollywood cultural performances, and hope to see much bigger crowd than previous years,” Manhar Patel President of Vaishnav Parivar (NZ) Inc. told The Indian Weekender.
The organisers further added that the weather forecast for the day is favourable for kite flying and they anticipate to see hundreds of families and their friends camp at the ground and have a great family outing.
“We also have bouncy castles, face painting, merry-go-round and other fun activities to do for children, and a huge canopy for people to sit and relax during the day,” Mr Patel said.
The event is supported by The Lion Foundation, Whau Local Board, Avondale College, The Trusts Community Foundation and The Indian Weekender as the media partner.
