Canterbury’s Telugu Badminton Club hosts its annual tournament and Christmas event

With the vision to bring community members together in the spirit of sport, Telugu Badminton Club of Canterbury organised annual earlier last weekend involving badminton lovers from all age groups.
Named after a renowned Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan Memorial Badminton Tournament, the tournament included Christmas celebrations at the end of the games, sponsored by small community businesses in the region.
The competition was open to everyone from different levels of playing, different nationalities and ethnicities.
Winners-A
The tournament has 48 players participating in 24 doubles teams and ensured that every player received a fair chance to play a minimum of nine games each.
In a combination of round-robin and knockout format, players from various ethnical backgrounds including Kiwi, Filipino, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Chinese, and Indian took part in this mega annual sports event.
After the round-robin, based on the skill level, teams were divided into three grades from which the winners and runners for mains and plates were declared.
The winners of mains:
• Grade A winners were John Graham & Jason Hsu; runners were Pavan Kruthinti & Mohammad Rashid.
• Grade B, the winners were Damith & Justin, and runners were Sundeep & Ben Jose.
• Grade C winners were Sai Babu & Raghu Ande, and runners were Gopi Sajja & Saranya Duraisamy.
The winners for plates:
• Grade A plates were Ajesh Jose & Ruby, and runners were Antony & Nigel.
• Grade B plates, winners were Gopinath & Thimiya, and runners were Dinesh Nirudoddi & Nilesh Patel.
• Grade C plates winners were Monty Kumar & Prasad Nayudu and runners were Suma Yanamadala & Sandesh Codhadu.
This tournament included not only the players but invited their families to join for Christmas celebrations. Coming together for cake and a delicious lunch, the celebrations were led by junior players and their families helped with Christmas celebrations.

The winners and runners were presented trophies and gifts by the organiser of the tournament, Rajeswar Peddisetti.
The year 2020 started with the George Miller Memorial Badminton League, and the club had conducted four tournaments this year.
“The TBCC, badminton is not just a sport but a connecting tool for the community and despite the tough challenges this year has brought, it was great to see people of different communities and ethnic backgrounds get involved with the tournaments we look forward to seeing more in 2021,” Mr Peddisetti said.
