Communities come together to celebrate India’s I-day

Shanti Niwas Charitable Trust members and supporters celebrated India’s 63rd year of independence in full force on Saturday 21st August 2010.

Celebrations of this historic day continue around the world to commemorate India’s Independence from British rule and their birth as a sovereign nation.

The event in Auckland, organised by Shanti Niwas founder, Indu Bajaj and Social Worker, Nilima Venkat. The event included an array of traditional and contemporary performances from not only the Indian community, but also Latin American dancers and Western African drummers.

A Karakia performed by a Constable Jackie Simeon from the Auckland Central District Police force blessed the event and the Indian flag hoisting ceremony marked the start of the celebrations.

Dignitaries who attended the function included Manukau City Mayor, His Worship, Len Brown, National Party members, Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga, Jackie Blue and Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi, Labour Party Member Rajen Prasad and Superintendent George Fraser, District Commander of Auckland Central accompanied by respected members of the police.

The Human Rights Commission of New Zealand support Shanti Niwas non- profit organisation that aims to address social issues facing older people of Indian and South Asian origin.

Seniors of Shanti Niwas performed an inspiring skit about health, well being, and how it is important for senior citizens to take care of themselves.

“Everyone was very enthusiastic and enjoyed themselves thoroughly in the rehearsing and performing of this programme”, Indu Bajaj said.
