Liquor Store owner couple fights back with two armed robbers, handover to Police

An owner couple of a liquor store in South Auckland foiled an armed robbery attempt at their store after bravely fighting and fending off the robbers on Sunday evening, September 6.
Sarbhjeet Singh and Maninder Kaur fought off two armed robbers, one of carrying a baseball bat and another robber charging the female store owner with her fist.
The incident was reported at Sharland Liquor Store in Manurewa, South Auckland region when two armed robbers- one identified as a 17-year-old male, and another 16-year-old female entered the liquor store at around 4:45 p.m. and intimidated the two store operators with fist and baseball bat.
Sarbhjeet Singh, who has owned the store for a decade now, was hit on the head with the bat but undeterred by the intimidation, pushed the offender back as he tried to attack him again.
In a moment of heat, the robber hit Mr Singh a couple of times, while he pushed or covered himself repeatedly in the parking space of the store.
Alarmed by the loud cries of Mr Singh and his wife, neighbour store owners came out and tried to stop the aggressively charging offender. The offender came back with his bat and arms to hit the store operators before being pinned down to the ground.
Mr Singh added that there were more than two people involved in the robbery attempt.
“As we tried to stop him, two men from a stationary vehicle came to rescue him from our clutches but failed and ran away in their car,” brother of the victim, Paramjeet Singh said.
Mr Singh said, his wife Maninder Kaur too fought off the female offender as she tried to take tobacco products and cash from the racks.
Local members present in the vicinity called the Police who arrived within 5-6 minutes and arrested the two offenders.
“Two people have been charged following an alleged aggravated robbery incident at a Manurewa liquor store on Sunday, September 6,” Detective Inspector Chris Barry told the Indian Weekender in a media statement.
“The pair were held at the scene by one of the store workers with the assistance of members of the public before they were apprehended by Police who arrived soon after.
“The duo has been charged with aggravated robbery and are appearing in the Youth Court. In general, Police are also finding that prevention techniques such as fog cannons work effectively in deterring offenders who try to target these types of commercial premises,” Detective Barry added.
Speaking to the Indian Weekender, Paramjeet Singh said it is unfortunate that small businesses like his have often being targeted by thugs for liquor, cigarettes and cash.
He said he was not happy that the two offenders apprehended for the attack by Police had been let out on bail, while his brother and his wife are still shaken by the unprovoked attack.
“My brother was stabbed with a double-bladed knife by three robbers in 2016, and petty thefts keep happening every now and then, and then this brazen attack with a bat.
“Sarbhjeet is now home, resting, he bled due to multiple blows with the bat to his head, but he is well and stable now with no life-threatening injuries,” Mr Paramjeet Singh added.
Mr Singh said he is still living in fear for himself and his family that he might not get attacked again as the offenders, or at least the accomplices to the offenders are still at large.
