Leaders meet community on FTA progress

New Zealand High Commissioner to India Ruper Holborow, Trade Minister Tim Groser and National MP Kanwaljit Bakshi addressed a gathering of Indian businesspeople at the Grand Chancellor Hotel in Auckland last week.

Both Mr Groser and Mr Holborow spoke of the great economic potential of the proposed Free Trade Agreement between New Zealand and India. Mr Groser said that the sheer statistics coming out of India showed what a formidable economic power India has come to be in recent years.

“In 15 years India will be the size of today’s Chinese economy,” he said. The whole of Asia held a lot of promise for New Zealand, he added. New Zealand’s Asian orientation over the past few years helped soften the blow of the global economic recession on the country, he said.

While FTA negotiations are inherently tough, he said the Indian negotiations with India would be the most important of all the other FTAs that New Zealand is negotiating.
