More than 1200 stranded Kiwis in India express interest in evacuation by govt’s charter flight

Govt will have a task cut out for itself as it plans to execute one of the most comprehensive peacetime evacuation plans with more than 1200 stranded Kiwis expressing interest to return home on charter’s flights from India.

National Party MP Dr Parmjeet Parmar has told the Indian Weekender that more than 1200 Kiwis stranded in India have expressed interest to catch govt announced charter flights.

On being asked what was the source of her information on the tentative numbers of Kiwis expressing interest in govt’s charter flights, Dr Parmar said, “All MPs have access to the National Crisis Management Centre and I have been using the service to receive all sorts of information and not just on this particular issue.”

“I have been approached, and I am sure all other Kiwi-Indian MPs would have been approached from members of the public about a range of issues that they are facing during this Level-4 lockdown period and I have been using this privileged position of being an MP to get as much information as we can get and share during these unsettling times,” Dr Parmar said.

Earlier, a  SafeTravel message containing an update about the expression of interest process has been sent to all New Zealanders registered as being in India.

The expressions of interest closed at 2 pm on 18 April NZST and the next step of actions are being planned.
