"We will reaffirm our commitment to multiculturalism, diversity, respect and tolerance" Mayor Phil Goff

"As-salamu ?alaykum.
"It is one year now since the devastating attacks on the mosques in Christchurch. As a nation, we were shocked that such a terrible event could happen in our country.
"Amongst the trauma and sadness at the human cost of that terrorist attack, what shone out was the outpouring of sympathy and support for the Muslim community from across our city and New Zealand, led by our Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern.
"As we remember those who were lost and injured and the sadness of their families, we commit ourselves to reaffirm our belief in promoting a city and country which is inclusive. Auckland is a proudly multicultural and multifaith city, where all people are equal and are treated with dignity and respect, regardless of race, colour or creed.
"We must celebrate our diversity as a source of strength and enrichment, not as a cause of division.
"We will speak out against the hateful ideologies that motivated the attacker. We will work to ensure our city is a place of harmony and understanding. We will uphold our community as a place where people are free to follow the faith of their choice and to celebrate their heritage, culture and identity with pride.
"On March 15, we will reaffirm our commitment to multiculturalism, diversity, respect and tolerance and say strongly that the ideology of hate will never have a place in our city or nation," Mayor Phil Goff said.
