“South Auckland issues are at my heart,” says Kharag Singh

Well known retailer and popular community leader Kharag Singh, who has lived in South Auckland for more than 30 years is committed to advocating for the wellbeing of youths, in particular, among other issues, prevalent in the area.

“I have lived over 30 odd years in South Auckland. I am fully aware of the growing issues of the local community. I am standing in the local elections with a desire to bring positive changes in the community and address the local issues people are going through, be it petty crimes in the region, traffic congestions, connectivity, housing etc.,” Mr Singh told The Indian Weekender.

Mr Singh, who is popularly known as “Sidhu” in the wider communities of South Auckland, has been a powerful voice for promoting inter-community harmony while dealing with complex issues of assaults and robberies of small business owners.

In particular, his efforts last year in body repatriation of a deceased Indian man to his family back home to family, despite some initial apprehension by his Maori wife in Rotorua was widely appreciated.

Since then he has become an ardent supporter of people, particularly youngsters, in distress.

He is standing in this local election with a commitment to bring more diversity and increasing Kiwi-Indian participation in local government bodies.

Mr Singh came to New Zealand in 1987 and started working in a printing company manufacturing inks for various purposes. He later started his own retail business in 1995 and has been involved in various projects and events of the Indian community in Auckland.

“The community has grown manifold over the years, and we do not have proportional voices represented in the local government or national government,” Mr Singh says.

“We need more ethnic Indian voices in the council so that we can input our requirements and give our inputs into the developments in our areas,” Mr Singh said.

Mr Singh, who has been a first-hand victim of petty crimes at his retail outlet, says at the ground level there has to be some rehabilitation process for the troubled youths who are committing such thefts and petty crimes.

“We need to help understand their issues, their influence and inclination towards the crime world and welcome them at our community gatherings and events so we can know and understand each other better,” Mr Singh added.

“I would appeal to the public to vote in this local elections, it is important to participate in local and then national elections so that we have enough representation of our diverse communities in politics.

“I also request people to vote for me and give me the opportunity to serve you in a greater capacity.”

“I have chosen the Labour Party as I find my personal values akin to their values of social justice. This year we are running as a team of three along with Mark Johnson and Lance Millward,” Mr Singh concluded
