Kiwi-Indian pop-star and YouTube sensation Shirley Setia makes Bollywood acting debut

The Auckland born and educated social media sensation Shirley Setia have been roped in for Sabbir Khan's action film "Nikamma".
Sony Pictures International Productions and Sabbir have come together for the action film.
Director Sabbir is renowned for launching fresh faces of Tiger Shroff and Kriti Sanon in their debut movie "Heropanti".
"I am always going to try and introduce new talent to the industry, and I am excited to present Abhimanyu and Shirley. They are a breath of fresh air and remind me of the zest that Tiger Shroff and Kriti Sanon had in their debut," Sabbir said.
Shirley is excited about her debut film. "I could not have asked for a better launch, and I am glad that my first foray into Bollywood is a prestigious association with an international studio and Sabbir, who has successfully launched such exciting talent in the industry," she added.
A former graduate student from the University of Auckland and marketing and publicity intern at Auckland Council, Shirley had become a YouTube sensation in the last few years.
In the past, she has worked part-time as a Radio Jockey in Radio Tarana with her own show 'Showtime with Shirley'.
She took part in a contest conducted by T-Series, where her YouTube entry was recorded in her bedroom while she was wearing pyjamas.
This earned her the nickname "Pyjama popstar" by the New Zealand Herald. She was declared as one of the winners from thousands of entries. Since then she has started regularly uploading on to YouTube and has since then collaborated with YouTube artists from across US, UK, India, and Canada.
Four years, 1.8 million subscribers and 114 million views later, she moved to Mumbai to pursue her dream of making it big in Bollywood.
Vivek Krishnani, Managing Director at Sony Pictures Entertainment, India said, The movie "Nikamma" is part of Sony's larger plans where the studio is sharply focused on introducing new talent to the industry on the back of strong content and talented filmmakers as it mounts an impressive slate for 2020."
Currently, she has 3.1 million subscribers on YouTube with 167 Million+ views.
The makers have wrapped the first schedule of the film, and have shot a song and few scenes. Jointly produced by Sony Pictures International Productions and Sabbir Khan Films, the film is slated to release in the summer of 2020.
