Deputy PM to inaugurate fifth NZ Hindu Conference

Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters will inaugurate a national conference of Kiwi Hindus on Saturday, May 4, in Sudima Hotel, Auckland.

The one day conference - New Zealand National Hindu Conference – aims to bring together the leading thinkers, leaders and members of the wider community to reflect upon the value that the Hindus from all part of the world bring to the Kiwi life.

This year the theme of the conference is Stronger Communities, Stronger New Zealand.

“This conference is all about showcasing the contributions that Hindus make to New Zealand and celebrating our success”, conference coordinator Nitika Sharma said.

“Leaders from 35 organisations, community groups and temples will be present at the conference discussing, deliberating and forming future pathways for best contributing to a stronger country,” Ms Sharma added.

Seven years gap since the last national Hindu conference

It is noteworthy that this fifth edition of national Hindu conference in New Zealand is happening after a gap of seven years, with the last conference having been held in 2012 (May 13-14).

In 2012, the conference was marked by the presence of several distinguished guests from the overseas Pacific region in the form of Vishwa Hindu Parishad of Australia, and Vishwa Hindu Parishad of Fiji, along with Ramakrishna Mission Fiji.

The conference had then deliberated on a wide range of topics including on Hindu-Maori relations, and discussing on proposals like introducing education on Hindu Dharma in New Zealand schools, similar to the lines of what is already achieved in Australia.

However, since then there has not been any major conference at the national level in New Zealand, despite many conferences being held at the regional level.

Earlier in November 2018, the facilitator and the founder of World Hindu Congress, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) graduate Swami Vigyananda, who was in the country to consolidate and galvanise the Hindu diaspora in New Zealand, had told The Indian Weekender that they are committed to making up for the lost time in hosting next national conferences.

Speaking to The Indian Weekender then, Swami Vigyananda had said, “Hindu Council of New Zealand has planned three national conferences around youths, economy, and general members in the next two years till 2020.”

More about the conference

The organisers are buoyed by the confirmation of the presence of Deputy Prime Minister at the conference.

“His presence gives the community the confidence that our contribution is valued in New Zealand,” Ms Sharma said.

Among other things, the conference seeks to portray the strong grass-roots connections that Hindu organisations have with the broader diaspora in New Zealand and how to galvanise the youths in promoting and strengthening Hindu Dharma.

The conference is based on a pre-registration invitation and any enthusiasts seeking to attend the conference can register themselves at the https://goo.gl/QkfQtz or can directly email or organisers on  hinduconference@gmail.com
