SBS Club Papatoetoe hosts its bi-annual sports event

SBS Sports and Cultural Club on Sunday, March 24 hosted its first of the two annual sports and family event at Papatoetoe Recreation Grounds.
The sports day event organised activities for people of all age groups- fun activities for the children, Kabaddi, volleyball and football for the men, musical chair for women and race activities for the senior citizens.
Six teams participated in the football tournament, six teams in the Kabaddi tournament and nine teams in volleyball.
“SBS Club hosts two sports every year events under NZ Kabaddi Federation, one in March-April and the second one in September-October,” Tirath Singh Atwal, Secretary of NZ Kabaddi Federation told The Indian Weekender.
“The main highlight of the sports event is Kabaddi, as we get several teams from outside Auckland and it is the most popular sports for our community here,” Mr Atwal added.
Malwa sports Club lifted the cup for winning the Kabaddi championship defeating Punjab Kesri Club; in Volleyball the A team of Kalgidhar Sports Club won the finals defeating Kalgidhar Sports Club B; Auckland Lions were declared winners in Football tournament defeating Sher-e-Punjab Soccer Club.
The event started around 9 a.m. and had about 1500 people turn up from morning till evening. The organisers also arranged bouncing castles and other fun activities for the children and provided free food and drinks for the participants and visitors.
As per the rules of NZ Kabaddi Federation, all the clubs have to host at least two events in a year and give a minimum of 80 per cent participation in the Federation’s sports tournaments hosted in a year.
The Hon Consul of India Bhav Dhillon was invited as a guest to the event, along with members of other clubs and other community organisations.
The event also hosted fundraising during the day and raised $5000 to be given as a donation from NZ Kabaddi Federation to the victims and families of the Christchurch mass shooting.
