Palmerston North fatal crash kills one person

Police are responding to a fatal crash in Palmerston North.

The crash occurred at the intersection of Railway Road and Roberts Line in Milson at 12.35 p.m.

One person died at the scene.

There are cordons on Railway Road and Airport Drive and diversions are in place.

Police ask that motorists avoid the area.

Drive Safe: It’s not worth risking your life.

In 2017, for the first time drug driving was a factor in more road deaths than alcohol.

“No one should ever get behind a wheel when they are impaired by drugs or alcohol, or when they are too tired to be driving,” says Superintendent Steve Greally, National Manager for Road Policing.

“And nobody should get in a vehicle with a driver who is in that state either.

It’s not worth risking your life.

“Driving tired can be as dangerous as driving drunk or drugged; your reactions are slower and it’s hard to concentrate.

That is not a good combination when you’re in charge of a two-tonne vehicle.

“Take breaks and share the driving when you can.

Road trips can be fun, but driving long distance is tiring, it requires a lot of concentration.

So it’s important to make sure your driver is fresh and alert.

“When you’re making your plans for New Year’s, make sure they include how you’re getting home.

“Be realistic; if you think you may end up drinking, don’t drive.

Plan ahead and get a ride from your family or mates, catch a bus, share a cab with friends, or nominate a sober driver for the night.

“Getting around safely is more important than worrying about a cab fare.

“And when you’re out with your mates, make sure you stick together.

Don’t leave anybody behind.

“Let’s take care of each other this summer and share good memories, not bad ones.”
