Kiwi-Indian student named ‘Dux 2018’ at Hastings Girls High School

A Year-13 Kiwi-Indian student at Hastings Girl High School has been awarded the Dux 2018 title for her exemplary academic and overall performance at the institution.

Isha Kaur scored first class in Physics, English, Calculus and Statistics this year, received the joint-award for debating and was also the Community Services Captain in the school.

Dux is Latin for ‘leader’ and the school awards the individual in Year-13 for their outstanding performance in both academic and extra-curricular activities in the school in a given year.

Ms Kaur is also the only Indian girl to achieve this milestone. Her elder brother Manmeet Singh was the first Indian boy to receive the Dux Award in the year 2009.

Ms Kaur intends to study a conjoint in Computer Sciences and Engineering from the University of Auckland next year with the aim to design prototypes and products applicable to real life issues and help individuals achieve a higher standard of living.

Ms Kaur sources her inspiration from her family –her father who is an engineer himself and a recipient of several awards and scholarships in NZ, her mother who was the first female Indian WOF inspector.

“Amidst centuries of unconstrained sexism, racism, and male exclusivity in the scientific community, women have still managed to break ground and be pioneers in science, tech, engineering, and mathematics, such as Marie Curie, Cecelia Payne, Katherine Johnson and Sameera Moussa, to name a few; if she could do something just half as good as them, she would be more than satisfied,” Ms Kaur told The Indian Weekender.

Ms Kaur has been a high achiever throughout her school life, not just in academics but also in community activities and has held leadership positions in school and community projects.

“I want to advise my peers and juniors just to work hard. Things aren’t always going to be easy, but the reward will be well worth the struggle, Ms Kaur said.
