There are many exciting things happening, but I can’t help but start with the excitement of Team India being in the quarter finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup. Watching India and Zimbabwe clash in Eden Park was a complete ‘paisa wasool’ and it seemed like the stadium had been taken over by Indians. India’s ‘Mr Cool’ captain did it again for his fans.

Well, I cannot go on to the next thing without sparing a moment for our Sikh brothers who were barred from watching India play at Eden Park. These young men were not allowed into Eden Park as they had on them the ‘kirpan’. In a world rife with differences based on culture and religion, it is important that governments and agencies worldwide acknowledge and embrace these differences. It’s important that the laws of the land that we call our home protect our beliefs and are inclusive of each one of us that make up the multicultural fabric of the country.

The excitement at Indian Weekender is building up as we announce two new awards this year. So, really, in the third year of the Hall of Fame, we have three awards that we will celebrate. We have included the details of the two new inclusions – Kiwi-Indian Young Achiever of the Year and Kiwi-Indian Unsung Hero of the Year – in this issue.

The youth today are becoming a force to reckon with, they bring in a breath of fresh air, have the energy, the momentum and the enthusiasm to take us all, as a community to the next level. Yet, the achievements and the hard work of a lot of our youth go unnoticed. It’s time to include them in the important decisions we make; it’s time to recognize and harness this untapped force called ‘youth’. To celebrate, encourage and honour the efforts and contribution of the youth who have become a face in the crowd, Indian Weekender is proud to announce the Young Achiever of the Year.

In my work within the Kiwi-Indian community, I have met many individuals who seem to have contributed their entire lives to serving our community. They are people who have gone way beyond the call of duty to make a difference in the lives of people. These people stand apart for the sheer reason that their efforts are not based at achieving anything for themselves. They have no want for name, fame or recognition.

They do this just out of the goodness of their hearts and therefore, their efforts and good work go unnoticed. To honour such people who make our lives brighter and richer just by being in it – we proudly announce the Unsung Hero of the Year. Let’s applaud these heroes by nominating them to this award.

Please make sure the nomination forms are filled in and sent through before the closing dates. Hall of Fame nominations close 31st March 2015 and the nominations for the Young Achiever and the Unsung Hero closes 15th April 2015. If you know anyone who you think deserves to receive any of the three awards, it’s time to act now. Nomination forms can be found online at www.iwk.co.nz As the event builds up, we will bring the details of it to our readers. We would like to thank our readers for the continued support and appreciation that we receive for the efforts we put in.

Here’s looking forward to the unfolding of all the excitement, including the one on the cricket field. Go Team India! Go the Men in Blue!!

Take care and until next time – may the force be with you!
