Unattended Bag Prompts Evacuation At Auckland’s Aotea Square

Police have cordoned off Aotea Square in central Auckland after an unattended bag was reported near the Aotea Centre.

A police spokesperson said building security staff raised the alarm just before 9am. Staff inside the building chose to self-evacuate as a precaution.

Officers have cleared part of the square and are urging the public to avoid the area while the incident is dealt with.

Inspector Peter Raynes said police are prioritising public safety and taking a precautionary approach. The Police Specialist Search Group has been deployed to inspect the bag.

“We are working to clear the area as quickly and as safely as possible,” Raynes said.
