The Five Horses of the Chariot of IWK's Success

The Five Horses of the Chariot of IWK's Success

Five years’ success of IWK is certainly the time to celebrate but it is also the time to introspect and be nostalgic about all the experiences that have led us to this day. Today, it may seem very pleasing to discuss the story of IWK fame but it is equally true that IWK; like any other entrepreneurship; has had its share of ups and downs, of good times and not so good times, of stresses and successes, of bricks and bouquets, of negative fuels and positive fuels, of frustration and exultation and of errors and trials. The journey that had started five years ago with certain beliefs, confidence, dreams, a burning desire to excel, dedication and discipline... still continues. It is like running a marathon, we may have been slow in the beginning but we surely know our destination. In this mad rush of the media world, IWK has carved a niche for itself. It enjoys being equally popular among different strata of Kiwi-Indian society. It has stood the test of time by being true to the principles of journalism. It has been fearless in reporting the positive news and has never believed in gaining cheap popularity by indulging in mud-slinging and sensational news.

It is very fortunate that IWK has been led and guided by such visionary leaders who have had the attitude, optimism and the mindset to catapult the newspaper in the right direction to create success. As someone has very precisely said that success comes to those who focus on the good, who think positively about themselves and who are able to preserve and who are positive about their dreams and goals until they become a part of their life and personality.
Ambitious projects like IWK take time to develop, execute properly and implement just like stable relationships, brilliant business ideas and change that do not happen over-night. Over the past five years, there have been many contributory factors to IWK’s achievements. Today I shall discuss five P’s or five defining factors of our success. They are: Positive Thinking, Persistence, Patience, Perseverance and Pertinacity.

‘Positive Thinking’ helped us to sail through all troubled waters. Whenever under stress or strain, or marred by criticism, it was the only way to survive and thrive. As Napoleon Hill had once said, “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” We believed in our strengths, focussed on our weaknesses and slowly & gradually converted them into our powers. We did not put any constraints on our dreams, never restricted our thoughts, never let our fears limit our beliefs. We believed in the mantra of ‘Never Give Up.’ Our leaders gave us that environment in which there was no room for any negative thoughts, self- doubt and pessimism. It was actually a transfer of belief which trickled down to each one of us belonging to IWK. By being in the company of the positive minded people, we created affirmation for success.

‘Persistence’ – There are scarcely any huge projects that do not go through the rigours of rejections at one point or the other. Although rejections have a nasty potential to discourage people but nothing can stop a persistent person who keeps on trying until he forces the world to believe in him. At IWK, we did come across dismissals and disappointments from different corners but we insisted in our plans and goals with unflinching faith and a burning desire to excel. We knew it right from the beginning that we would not get there if stumbled over trivial obstacles. We knew it that we would not see the results instantly but we would have to have definite plans and would have to continually work on those plans. We shut our minds to all negativity and did not let other people’s opinions interfere with our consistent hard work. We kept going and with persistence, determination and discipline achieved the expected results- it was just a matter of time.

‘Patience’ – It is the biggest challenge to keep one’s calm when the things don’t happen the way we want or when the results are not as gratifying as we expect. On the other hand side, it is also true that some things are worth waiting for. The planning and execution of a newspaper of IWK stature requires time and patience to actualize. When we started the newspaper, we had to be contented with limited resources, negligible sponsorship and thin readership but we knew that our dreams were big and they required time for nurturing and growth. We followed the laws of time and understood it fully well that we could not immediately reach fruition of our efforts. We stuck to our plans even when others around us seemed to be moving faster than us. On the way to gaining momentum, we encountered many mistakes but they did not dissuade us from the right direction. We were not in a particular hurry to reach the destination rather we also wanted to enjoy the landscape on the way. We wanted to be what we are today with infinite patience although the fruits of our labour were not evident then. After all, success is all about trial and error.

‘Perseverance & Pertinacity’ – Success does not come without obstacles and it is not about avoiding problems, rather it is more about overcoming them. While facing setbacks during the course of five long years, we put into practice the other two P’s- perseverance and pertinacity. It was due to these two virtues that we could muster the ability and drive to start and continue steadfastly on the path towards our goal. Slowly perseverance and pertinacity became the personal values of the newspaper and gave us the will power to focus on our aims. We faltered and failed but then we picked up the pieces, kept pushing, kept trying and only stopped to evaluate the factors that were not working for us. It was like building stamina to run the marathon or actually doing the right things in the right direction and at the right time.

Indian Weekender marched on its journey with unparalleled ability to unyielding adherence to its purpose to serve Kiwi-Indian community under several hardships and circumstances. We were resolute in our intentions; never backing down. Our failures did not deter us from trying again. We believe in never quitting, never saying no. Mechanically, it has become our mindset; our habit.
So friends, these five qualities which have become our habits now, have brought IWK to an exalted status in New Zealand. They are our guiding principles, our light-house and the forces to reckon with. They shall always be manifested in our working and thinking and with them; IWK will go stronger, bigger and better with each passing year!

Five years’ success of IWK is certainly the time to celebrate but it is also the time to introspect and be nostalgic about all the experiences that have led us to this day. Today, it may seem very pleasing to discuss the story of IWK fame but it is equally true that IWK; like any other...
