Celebrating diversity, celebrating Race Relations Day

Celebrating diversity, celebrating Race Relations Day

National is building a strong and inclusive nation with incentives that reward hard work and back our ability to take on the world and win. Our diverse ethnic communities are an important part of this and contribute to our overall culture in New Zealand.
We are working hard to strengthen ties between our ethnic communities and all New Zealanders. A great example of this is Race Relations Day, which was celebrated on March 21.
It marks the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which is celebrated around the world. This year’s Race Relations Day theme is “My dream is Aotearoa New Zealand is...” – it’s a chance to take time and think about the things that are important to you.
The March 21 date formally commemorates the tragic loss of life at the apartheid-related massacre in Sharpeville, South Africa in 1960, and is dedicated by the United Nations to the achievement of the goals of the Convention for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
New Zealand signed the Convention on 25 October 1966 and ratified it on 22 November 1972.We are truly a multicultural society - one in four New Zealanders are born overseas and 60 per cent of our workforce growth comes from migrants.
Our ethnic and migrant communities are playing a bigger role in our society and our economy, helping us export more and creating more long-term, sustainable jobs, giving New Zealanders an edge when working in a global village. In the face of global economic uncertainty, this Government is working hard to protect New Zealand and jobs - National wants to see all members of our ethnic communities in fulfilling jobs, contributing to our domestic economy.
National wants to ensure fair and equal opportunities for all New Zealanders and involving ethnic communities in events of national significance such as Race Relations Day is part of creating greater awareness of our diverse culture here in New Zealand.
This month, there are many events being held around the country supporting race relations – to see what’s on visit http://www.hrc.co.nz/race-relations/race-relations-day-2013. I encourage you to take the time to enjoy what a beautiful, vibrant and multicultural country we live in.
