Manj Musik and Nindy Kaur gear up for their first Auckland tour

The stage for the biggest Bollywood party of the year is set. India's popular artists, Raftaar, Manj Musik and Nindy Kaur, will enthral a live audience on October 1 at Logan Campbell Centre in Auckland. In an exclusive interview, Indian Weekender spoke to the husband-wife duo, Manj and Nindy, to get a peek into their world of music.

Manj Musik

IWK: You were one of three founding members of RDB. Tell us a little about the band.

Manj: The band was created from the hobby of DJing. Kuly paji and I created something different back in 1997 where we would DJ, sample hip-hop beats into a computer and pre-beat match them to the bhangra track. Then, we would trigger those beats from the computer over the song and mix them live. This was unheard of and after the first event where we were DJs, which was Surj's birthday, we got a string of shows. Kuly paji went off to the university and still kept making beats on his computer while I would do the same at home. Our first break was when Herbie Sahara asked me to make his Tappe track with a garage mix.

I sat with Herbie for hours putting it together on my own, as Kuly paji was at in another city. After that song was released, I was given another opportunity with Sahara. I worked on Soniye Ni Soniye where I rapped. After Kuly paji finished his degree, we both started to make music together. My friend Tony Untouchables Records gave us a break. They invested in equipment for us and for our studio and the album was released by them. This album marked the debut of RDB.

The rest was history in making.

IWK: It has been rumoured that you’ve approached Kylie Jenner for your next single. Any comments?

Manj: I posted an image on my Instagram asking who would the followers choose—Kylie or Kim—and the media went into frenzy! After that, I had to make sure things happened. So yes, we are in talks with the management.

IWK: How is it to work alongside your wife?

Manj: It's amazing! We love touring together, and we love bouncing off each other on stage and in the studio. She gives me some killer ideas and she is amazing on stage. People love the chemistry we have. Some papers have marked us as the Indian JAY Z and Beyonce and some in the UK as Posh and Beck. We are honestly flattered. All we want to do is create good music and show the world that good relationships in marriage do exist.

IWK: You'll be performing for the first time in Auckland. What do you look forward to the most?

Manj: We love New Zealand! We have been here once before for a private event and loved it. We look forward to seeing fresh new faces and reactions. A new crowd always give us a certain buzz that a regular crowd doesn't.

Nindy Kaur

IWK: What led you into the music industry?

Nindy: Manj! To be honest, I had no intentions of pursuing music as a profession. I was quite happy cooking for my husband and just giving him some moral support. One day he heard me singing in the car, and the next thing I knew I was in a vocal booth trying to sing. I’m not a professional singer nor have I ever learned how to sing, but Manj guided me and he said that if I sang, we could work and travel the world together. He said that I had a unique voice, something I get from other producers and directors as well.

IWK: You’ve worked with different artists before you joined RDB where you started working with Manj. How different is it to work alongside your husband?

Nindy: It's quite laid back. He knows what I am capable of, and he knows my limits—what I will sing and what I won't. Sometimes working with other producers is a challenge, as they have one idea and I have another, but Manj and I are the same. We think alike and that is what creates that magic in the song and on the stage.

IWK: What do you enjoy more—recording a song in the studio or performing live?

Nindy: Definitely in the studio. I love performing live but it has been almost 10 years, and I miss my son when travelling.

IWK: You’ll be performing for the first time in Auckland. What do you look forward to the most?

Nindy: The crowd reaction for sure! I love it when people go crazy and no one has seen us perform live in Auckland yet, so this will be awesome!
