iTMOi (in the mind of igor)

A dance work iTMOi (in the mind of igor), mixing North Indian traditional Kathak with modern contemporary dance is featuring at this year’s Auckland Arts Festival.

It is the latest full length ensemble piece from award winning artist Akram Khan, from the UK, who is of Bangladeshi descent.

Formed 14 years ago his dance company, the Akram Khan Company is considered one of the most innovative dance companies in the World. A milestone in his journey was when he was choreographer of a major section of the spectacular London 2012 Olympic Games.

iTMOi is inspired by the work of prolific Russian composer Igor Stravinsky and his most famous ballet, The Rite of Spring.

Featuring an original score by a group of extraordinary composers including British Indian, Nitin Sawhney, iTMOi is yet another extraordinary artistic collaboration from Khan and his talented team, creating pulsing sounds new to the ear, giving this mythical work about love, marriage, faith and sacrifice its rich and delicate poetry.

Be prepared for a mind-blowing dance and performance work that showcases Khan’s choreographic genius.

I was fortunate to have met him at the Singapore Arts Festival in 2004 when he was there to do the World premiere of his production called Ma, which also featured Kathak with a contemporary flair.

He told me then he grew up wanting to breakdance but was dragged to Kathak lessons by his mother when he was seven. He moved on to contemporary dance in his teens.

Khan has been the recipient of numerous international dance awards, including an Olivier Award for his solo production DESH in 2012. He has also been recognised with an MBE for his contribution to the UK dance community

Khan has been choreographer-in-residence and associate artist at the Southbank Centre, the first non-musician to be afforded this status. He has danced with Juliette Binoche in the dance drama piece In-i, and choreographed for Kylie Minogue’s Showgirls tour. Khan is currently an associate artist at Sadler’s Wells Theatre

According to the festival’s artistic director Carla van Zon what she liked about iTMOi was that it was a production by a Diaspora artist.

“What fascinates me about Akram Khan is that he comes from a very traditional background and works in a contemporary western form. He brings his tradition into his work.”

iTMOi is showing at the ASB Theatre at Aotea Centre from Thursday 19 March to Saturday 21 March at 8pm. For bookings contact Ticketmaster- www.ticketmaster.co.nz or telephone 09 9709700 or 0800 111 999.
