Young talent on parade
Scores of young talents featured in two mesmerizing dancing and drama performances in Auckland over the past two weeks.

Last Sunday, September 20, 45 students of the Narthana Aalayam Indian School of Dance took stage for the Natya Kuravanji programme at the Hawkins Centre in Papakura.

Last Sunday, September 13, the Meenakshi Kalyanam dance drama was held by another batch of 45 students at the Ray Small Drive venue from 4pm.

For three hours, dance teacher Kalaichchelvi Uthayakumaran’s students performed the delicate and demanding performances of Bharat Natyam.

Kalaichchelvi, “Selvi”, said it was an evening to remember as her students showcased their Bharata Natyam talents on stage.

The first part of the programme focused on dance performances and the second part was a dance-drama session.

Selvi, who has been teaching the art of Bharata Natyam for the past 19 years, said her students ranged in age from four-and-a-half years to adults.

They will eventually go on to perform Arangetram, dance graduation, in a public performance later, said Selvi, who is originally from Sri Lanka.

Parents and relatives of the performers at Hawkins Centre said they were enthralled by the talents of the young performers.
