A showcase of Bharata Natyam

A showcase of Bharata Natyam
Forty-five traditional dance students take to the stage this Sunday and the next in two separate concert programmes in Papakura.

This Sunday, September 13, the Meenakshi Kalyanam dance drama will be held at the Hawkins Theatre, 13 Ray Small Drive, from 4pm.

And next Sunday, September 20, another batch of 45 dance students takes the stage for the Nayta Kuravanji. Both events are organized by the Narthana Aalayam Indian School of Dance.

Dance teacher Kalaichchelvi Uthayakumaran, better known as “Selvi”, said it would be an evening to remember as her students showcased their Bharata Natyam talents on stage.

She said the first part of the programme will focus on dance performances and the second part will be a dance-drama session.

Selvi, who has been teaching the art of Bharata Natyam for the past 19 years, said her students ranged in age from four-and-a-half years to adults.

They will eventually go on to perform Arangetram, dance graduation, in a public performance later, said Selvi, who is originally from Sri Lanka.

Tickets for the concert programmes are $10 for adults and $8 children, (2-12), available from Sheila at 09 537 3481, or email sheilam@xtra.co.nz
Tickets will also be available at the door.
