Singh is King

A new Indi King was crowned in Auckland at the weekend, and its grand success has prompted the organizers to make the show even bigger and better.

Mt Wellington’s Shaneil Singh out-danced seven other contestants to claim the 2009 crown and $1000 prize money in the dance extravaganza organized by RTG Corp Ltd at the Dorothy Winstone Centre on Saturday.

Azhar Adams picked up $500 as first runner-up and Shak Romeo collected $250 as second runner-up in the second annual all-male competition which attracted eight participants.

And the event founder, Yogesh Gounder, announced after the finale that after next year’s competition, a King of Kings competition will be held in 2011 which will feature the inaugural 2008 winner Nav Chand, 2009 king Shaneil, and also the 2010 winner.

From then on, the King of Kings will be held every three years, Gounder said.
For the 2009 king Shaneil, 22, this was his first attempt at a dancing competition for which he had auditioned at the last minute.

“It was his first performance in front of a crowd and I must say he put in a very clean performance,” Yogesh said.

Fifty per cent of the votes were cast by the audience and the rest was by judges Viraf Todywalla, Gina and Ram Kumar Sewak.

Other entrants this year were: Azhar Khan, Shaneil Verma, Raja Sandhu, Vicky Pillay and Ashril Singh – two more than last year.

Raja Sandhu, the only contestant to perform solo, put up a remarkable effort on his own.
Viraf, of V4U Entertainments, put up a sensational performance as a guest artist, as did Gina and Ram Kumar Sewak.

Yogesh said the key behind the success of this year’s event was the careful management of operations by Mumta, his wife.

Main sponsors: Poojaz Designer Fashions, Tyre World and Fairmall Investments, and also the Indian Weekender.
