Rahul Uppal offers to give back to the society what he has received quite generously since his arrival in Auckland

While young people were busy planning their New Year’s eve parties and posting updates on Facebook, a young man in Auckland posted the following:

"Hi everyone

To all those who been here for long time it's just a suggestion from their little bro that to help people we don't need any relation and bonding just help anyone you see need it
Thank you guys"

Uppal has been in New Zealand for four years now. He is, at present, a contractor with Now Couriers for the past six months, after completing a diploma in Business Management and dabbling with a few other jobs.

During one of his rounds near the airport, he saw this guy looking sad and waiting outside with a depressed look about him. On enquiry, the guy said that his uncle who promised to pick him up, had his phone switched off, explains Uppal.

“I helped him call up another of his friends and dropped him at his home. I also gave him my phone number and address and told him to contact me if he needs anything or finds himself stranded again,” says Uppal.

“Later, I learned this person is from Pakistan and realised that you don’t need a relationship to help people,” adds Uppal.

When Uppal had first arrived in Auckland, he was lucky to have his mate from his hometown pick him up from the airport and look after him. “I stayed with him in the same house for the first year of my stay and was very helpful. This is just my effort to help other people and pay back for the kindness I received when I was new to the country.”

Uppal goes on to mention that it is a common sight to see stranded students and new immigrants on Queen Street, sometimes even overngiht. “Auckland Central is where they come from the airport and often they are mistreated by their relatives and friends on whom they depend for the initial settling-in process,” says Uppal.

Since his Facebook post, Uppal has helped one person, by picking her up from the airport, “who now lives in the same building as me,” he adds.

This person, a woman, had contacted Uppal on Facebook after she saw his post on the Facebook group ‘Indians in New Zealand’. The post had gathered 88 likes and about 20 comments – both positive and sceptical.

It’s fairly easy to build up a rapport on a networking site like Facebook, but how do you build up trust with a complete stranger who resides in a faraway land? The dynamics get complicated when you consider the gender equation.

“If you can ask a stranger on the road for directions in a new country, how is that different from talking to a Facebook user with a group?” asks Uppal.

Fair enough. “All you need is the motivation to help others. Even if you are busy, there are people who need your help and it doesn’t take much to extend that helping hand,” adds Uppal.

So the next time, your pickup doesn’t arrive in time or stands you up, you know which number to dial!
