Community Leader stands for Whau

Raj Mitra is an epitome of dedication to community work. He is driven by the belief that every individual has a responsibility to contribute to the betterment of those living around them. This belief has stood strong since he left India to set foot in a foreign land over thirty years ago. Raj earnt his degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Masters of Business Administration in India and shortly afterwards headed to Southern Africa to work as a Project Manager for a British copper mining company. His desire to serve less priviledged members of society only intensified after witnessing the dire poverty present in Africa. He joined Lions Club in 1986 and rose through the ranks to become President and later District Cabinet Secretary for Lion’s. He undertook many projects in this time aimed at alleviation of poverty including building of schools & libraries for underpriviledged and blind children, setting up free resthome care for the elderly and spearheading Lions International’s “Sight First “ project to reverse preventable blindness in Africa. Raj made a significant contribution as a Lions member for 15 years in Southern Africa and was a recipient of the highest honours in Lions society; the Melvin Jones Fellowship and the International President’s Appreciation Award.
Raj called time on his African adventure 14 years ago when he moved to New Zealand but his community involvement has endured. He joined Lions club of Point Chevalier and in a short space of time became the Club President and later Zone Chairman for West Auckland clubs. He has also been involved with several other major organisations including Starship Hospital, Diabetes Auckland & Red Cross. Raj was also a trustee for a senior citizens organisation and involved with Citizens Advisory Bureau. He is a Justice of Peace. He has played a key role in fundraising for disaster relief efforts such as tsunami & flood relief projects in Fiji & Samoa.
Harshad Patel, the President of New Zealand Indian Central Association has strongly endorsed Raj’s nomination for Whau Local Board & Portage Trust. He says he is highly impressed to note Raj’s leadership ability, dedication & commitment to serve selflessly for community.
Whau Local Board comprises of Avondale, Blockhouse Bay, New Windsor, Green Bay, New Lynn and Kelston .There is a growing Indian population in these areas and thus a strong need for our voice to be heard in all major spheres including the Auckland Local Boards. This will be possible if our community stands firmly behind Raj in Whau Local board & Portage Trust elections.
