A man of the people

A man of the people
Afiff Shah is not content with just doing well for himself in life.

He is one of those driven people who achieve greater satisfaction when others in the community achieve contentment.

His tireless work in the community - be it sport or religion - is well on its way to making him a man of the people.

Shah, 43, is one of the youngest JPs (Justice of Peace) in the community, he is an executive on the board of the NZ-Fiji Soccer Association, and also serves on the council of the South Auckland Muslim Association.

Born in Ba and raised in Lautoka, Shah is son of Lateef Sha, owner of the Timber & Building Supplies hardware stores in Fiji. He is the Fraud Assurance Manager for Vodafone New Zealand, and is also studying for his PhD in Business Management.

Shah acknowledges that being a JP places a great responsibility on him, but he thrives on that social pressure which inspires him to do even more in the community.

Living close to a retirement home in Takanini had much to do with his foray into the realm of a JP.
"I always used to help out the residents at the rest home, and soon one of them suggested that I become a JP, and that I had the right qualities to be one," said Shah.

"So he nominated me to the Minister and soon I was a JP." He was only 39 then. Shah enjoys the rapport with the members of the community and this has served him well as one of the executives on the board of the NZ-Fiji Soccer Association.
The association is now a major organiser of numerous tournaments in New Zealand, and is at the forefront of the development of the game among the youth in the community - the most recent being the most recent being the Veterans tournament in January and the Waitangi Cup.

He is also chairman of the council of the South Auckland Muslim Association, which owns the Jame Masjid al Mustafa mosque in Otahuhu.

Under his guidance, the mosque has taken on the role of leading the younger generation away from the path of crime, and educating them with sound moral beliefs.

The mosque also has a women's wing which is responsible for organising numerous activities in Auckland.

"The idea is to maintain harmony in the community, and we have been successful in it so far," said Shah, who chairs a council of five members who have been appointed for five years.

Shah is humble about his involvement in the community. "It is a non-profitable role, but I enjoy doing it for the people." Well spoken, like a true man of the people.
