Swarangal rocks

The stars of Swarangal shone bright in Auckland last week in a night of glamorous entertainment.

Swarangal, a group of friends who made popular music in the 90s, got together for a “blast from the past” performance at the Dorothy Winstone Centre in Howe St.

Seasoned artistes - including prominent vocalists such as Raji Indrakumar, Suren Surendran, Raju Sundresan and Rita Krishnamurthi - performed with ease for the more than 1000 audience which included the young and old.

Despite a hiccup in the sound system which delayed the event for a while, the group came through with flying colours – with a majority of the audience more than satisfied with the performances.

“It was a great show,” said Mt Eden’s Satendra Kumar who took his family to the show expecting great entertainment.

“They sang well and the music was fantastic,” Kumar told Sandesh.

The show also featured several performances by talented young artistes performing traditional dance items.

Comprising artistes from India, Sri Lanka, Fiji and Malaysia, Swarangal is best known for winning the Battle of the Bands competition in the 90s – and also releasing a CD of its own compositions.

The singers on the night were accompanied by Arun Thayaparan (percussion), Chris Anthony (keyboard), Praveen Chand (lead guitar), Anthony Dennys (bass guitar, Antony Yempee (lead guitar), Avelin Chetty (tabla), Baba Umar Ali (keyboard), Guna Singaram (percussions), Joscel Alexander (electronic drums) and Madhan Kalyan (keyboard and violin).

“Despite problems with the sound for a while, everyone enjoyed the show, and went away happy,” Swarangal member Rita Krishnamurthi said.

“We have received some very nice comments from people, so our months’ of preparation was worth it.

“People were happy and that’s what matters.”

The group is considering another show next year. Watch this space for details.
