Heading for a sellout

The Indi King Show at the Dorothy Winstone Centre on Saturday is heading for a full house.

Organiser Mumta Gounder said tickets had been selling well and they were well on track for a full house.

Mumta said they had decided to keep ticket prices down ($10) to enable people to cope in these tough economic times.

A lack of exposure for young male dancers is behind the birth of the Indi King – a repertoire featuring all-male performers set to shake up the Dorothy Winstone Centre on July 11.

And the team behind the show, Yogesh and Mumta Gounder, say the outstanding success of the first show last year is what has propelled them into doing it again.

Yogesh, the show founder, himself featured in many dance performances.  He always wondered how mostly females were the lead dancers assisted by a host of males in the background.

“Yogesh thought the male dancers in the background were extremely talented, but would never get the same exposure as the leading female dancers,” Mumta told Sandesh.

“Hence, the Indi King series was born.”

Although only males are the lead dancers, they are allowed to have females as back-up performers.

Both holding full-time banking careers in Auckland, Yogesh and Mumta, have been working late into the nights to make the show a reality.

This year’s programme has attracted eight entrants – Azhar Khan, Azhar Adam, Shak Romeo, Shaneil Verma, Shaneil Singh, Raja Sandhu, Vicky Pillay and Ashril Singh – two more than last year.

Among guest performers this year is well known Auckland entertainer Viraf Todywalla of V4U Entertainments, who will also be one of the judges. Fifty per cent of voting will be by the audience.

Nav Chand, the winner last year, will also feature in a guest performance. To spice up the evening, Latin entertainer Gina T will doing a salsa dance and last year’s Kaun Banega Superstar champ Abhas is also expected to feature in a guest role.

Winner gets to take home a $1000 cheque as the King of the Dance Floor, first runner-up $500, and second runner-up $250.

Main sponsors: Poojaz Designer Fashions, Tyre World and Fairmall Investments.

Tickets ($10) have been selling fast, says Mumta. “We wanted to keep it affordable for families in these hard economic times.”
