Slumdog rakes in 8 Oscars

February 26 2009
Indians all over the world were glued to their television sets, on Oscar night, despite what they may have felt about hype around the movie. While some say that they have seen better 'Hindi' movies than that, many Indians are big fans of the movie. All the previous awards it received and the media attention that Slumdog got, being an unconventional Ocsar nominee, tipped the scales towards it winning.
The little kids (and cast and crew that Fox Searchlight flew from India) from Mumbai walked the red carpet at the 81st Academy Awards amidst the glittering hollywood stars. Jon Grip on Twitter (www.twitter.com) said "The child stars of Slumdog are so sweet!" There was natural spontaneity in the crew and cast of "Slumdog Millionaire". Part of it was their utter disbelief that this moment was happening, despite all the earlier awards. One of the kids wanted to see Miley Cyrus, Freida Pinto (who plays 'Latika' in the movie) told Jill on the red carpet. There is speculation, that Freida and the film's 18 year old lead actor, Dev Patel (the star of 'Skins') are an item.
Slumdog Millionaire won eight out of the ten nominations it received, including Best Picture and Best Director for Danny Boyle. The cast and crew packed the stage as Christian Colson received the Best Picture award, in a truly Indian moment. Boyle dedicated the Oscar to Mumbai which he said dwarfed 'this guy' motioning to the Oscar statuette. The first award it received was for adapted screenplay, presented to Simon Beaufoy, who wrote the story based on the book 'Q & A' by Vikas Swarup. The book is a magnificent read.
Slumdog also won the best film editing award. It won the cinematography award for Anthony Dod Mantle. The movie took the awards for best song and best score. A. R.Rahman's (whose name was gutteralized by Alicia Keys and her fellow presenter) song 'Jai Ho' is set to Bollywood choreography that plays during the credits. The lyrics were by Gulzar.
Rahman put on a wonderful performance of his nominated songs "Jai Ho" and "O Saya". They were harmonized with the other nominated song 'Down to Earth' from the soundtrack of "Wall-E". The colorful dancers both african and indian punctuated the rhythmic fusion of Indian and western music. Rahman seemed humbled by the award and enigmatically said, that it was because he chose love over hate, that he was here at the Oscars.
Resul Pookutty who recieved the Oscar for sound mixing, threw in a little Indian culture as he gave his thank you speech. 'Om' he said was the sound between the silence. He received his award, along with Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke .
As an added bonus, Smile Pinki, by Megan Mylan, a story set in India and about the ostracism of a little girl with a cleft lip, won the best short documentary award.
It was quite a day for India at the Oscars and Indians the world over, basked in the attention.
