Giants: India’s first international service organisation

“Those to whom life has been kind should not accept this good foryune as a matter of course but instead it’s one’s duty to think continually of those who have been denied this privilege.”
It is with this one thought in mind that Giant’s International was formed in India’s commercial capital, Mumbai, in 1972.
An active and service oriented group of individuals under the able leadership of Mr Nana Chudasama who later became the Sheriff of the city of Mumbai got together to start this service organisation to work for the betterment of society with service toward the underprivileged and poorer sections of cociety.
With that humble beginning nearly four decades ago Giants has today blossomed into an international organisation not unlike other similar organisations like Lions and Rotary International.
Giants International is India’s first international service organisation. The foundation and basis of this movement were courage and conviction, moral leadership and intellectual integrity of the Indian people in accepting Giants as an organisation which would work towards bettering communities all over the world, dervving its strength from compassion and virtue to bring good cheer and hope in the community.
Each letter in the word ‘Giants” stand for something. In fact it’s an acronym for the values it stands up for: Generosity, Integrity, Action, Nobility, truthfulness and Service. These qualities are manifestations of good solid citizenship. Eac member of the Giants organisation is expected to live up to these ideals and his utility and promptness in action are judged accordingly.
The Giants movement provides its members an ideology-based organisation platform to enable citizens to play their role for community welfare. Every good citizen wishes to contribute to some useful social service.
Giants organisation helps translate that wish into will. Every citizen has a responsibility to contribute and do something that goes beyond the welfare and happiness of his own family. Each Giants International member makes a commitment that he shall carry out all actions with generosity in his heart and with integrity as his guide.
The Giants International symbol is in tomato-red and golden colours. This has significant interpretation attached to it. The capital letter “G” stands for Giants while its white colour symbolises peace and progress.
The profile of the human with the globe in his hands held in a careful and nurturing manner signifies desire to serve and uplift the less fortunate and make the world a better place to live. The golden hues of the globe signify happiness and prosperity.
The central committee is the highest policy making body and is headed by the world chairman. The federation is the formation of a body to coordinate, direct and supervise the activities of the group headed by the federation president along with a team of officers. Every Giants group must have a minimum of 25 members and each city or town as many groups as can function smoothly.
“Action” is the key word. Each Giants member is encouraged to act proactively and execute result-oriented projects and programmes for the betterment of the community.
While individual groups are free to carry out service activities to suit the local need, the international and federation group identifies priority programmes in the country of operation. In India, family planning has been given the top slot followed by consumer protection initiatives, afforestation, drug awareness and control and assistance to physically and mentally disabled individuals and institutions catering for them.
Besides over 500 active groups in India, Giants are actively working in countries on almost every continent. Giants groups operate in Mauritius, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, the UK, the USA, South Africa, Ukraine and there is one group even in Auckland.
Efforts are now under way from some individuals here in Auckland to form more groups in both Auckland and New Zealand and other countries in Oceania.
The doors of Giants International are open to all who subscribe to the aims and objectives and are willing to work toward their fulfillment.
