Power of 5 : Community Associations

Power of 5 : Community Associations

The guardian angels: guiding and steering towards the light

Protecting a place, a place every individual holds close; their rights. The community organisations
in our society have dramatically taken the onus, over the years, to be at the forefront of every
occasion be it a celebration or a call to action. Creating strategies, organizing events, raising funds, securing a voice vote, and in some cases acting as the last resort for the helpless.

The responsibilities are immense, but these associations have backed themselves to set and
achieve challenging goals. Ominously for us they have always delivered. It has been a pleasure
working with these organisations here in New Zealand and the Indian Weekender marks it as its
duty to support these pillars of strength, these righteous steersman…these guiding angels that have stood by the paper in the last 5 years.

We raise a toast to these associations and many more who have worked night and day to make
the lives of others better. They are our spirits that watch over and protect this sacred space.

Manukau Indian Association

Media / press as a responsible partner along with the legislature, executive and judiciary; has been one of the fundamental role players in bringing the world to its current state where civilization is enjoying the fruits of freedom as never before.

In New Zealand with its diverse demographic composition it was essential to give voice to various ethnic groups and with the arrival of Indian Weekender five years ago; this task has been well accomplished. Today we have an organ which is brilliantly keeping the pulse of New Zealanders in general and Kiwi Indians in particular. The coverage in various arenas; such as political, social, cultural, economic, entertainment or current affairs; is able to provide a complete package and on behalf of Manukau Indian Association, it is my pleasure to congratulate the team Weekender for making it possible.

Waitakere Indian Association

Waitakere Indian Association (WIA) was established in year 2000 and has been very active in representing the Indian Community in Auckland. The organisation is made up of volunteers who are incredibly dedicated to serving the community. In its endeavours to integrate the Indian population in this newly adopted country WIA has organised Diwali and Holi Festivals on a grand scale and attracted huge crowds.

This has been possible through partnerships with radio and print media. Indian Weekender has been generously providing us the print media support through which we have been able to reach the masses. Our recent Holi Celebration coverage provided us with the platform to accomplish another very successful event.

Amongst its activities WIA started a Hindi School in the West, currently runs a Senior Citizen Group, a Youth and Sports group and a Women’s Wing. WIA was accorded with the Supreme Community Award in 2012 and a certificate of Achievement as Community of the Year in 2011.

This Easter WIA is organising an Easter Celebration on a large scale with the Indian Church Groups in Auckland. According to recent articles in our National newspapers the migrant community is still seen as not having done enough to integrate. Hopefully along with other events this will add to overcome this discrepancy. It will show that many Indians were born Christians or have adopted Christianity adding to the diversity of New Zealand.

We wish to thank Indian Weekender for their support and look forward to continuing our  association.

- Naveen Prakash, President, Waitakere Indian Association

The entire scheme of Vedanta is to make man progressively happier and more contented in his day to day life. Friends of Fiji Health

Friends of Fiji Health (FOFH] is NZ registered charitable trust formed by former Fiji Citizens residing in New Zealand. Whilst our primary aim is provision of specialist service delivery, medical, surgical and Obs & Gyne (at this stage); we are also very committed and engaged in training and educational aspects working along side our local talented counterparts and in conjunction with FNU, MOH and local communities.

We remain utterly steadfast, totally dedicated and committed in providing these services and we thank all donors and supporters to make this a reality without whose support we cannot continue to function. All our services to the Fiji health system are on voluntary basis at free of cost.

“Despite being well established in New Zealand over a number of years, former Fiji citizens have never lost their interest in and concerns for their birthplace and its people. This yearning shaped the intentions of a group of medical practitioners, business professionals and community leaders in forming Friends of Fiji Health as a vehicle to serve the health needs of some of Fiji.

The complementary and/or supplementary medical services are provided within the existing framework in the Fiji ,and currently restricted to public hospitals only.

In our endeavors in the past years we thank the Indian Weekender for standing by us in creating awareness about important issues from time to time.

We congratulate them on their 5th year anniversary and wish them strength.
