Sony TV was all set to telecast the film at 12 noon and 8 pm on Sunday while the I&B Ministry directed them to telecast the film after 11 pm.
Sneha Rajani, Senior Executive Vice President & Business Head, Sony Entertainment Television, tweeted a dialogue from the film: "Logon ka naam unke kaam se hota hai.. Lekin mera naam badnaam ho kar hua.." ~The Dirty Picture."
Filmmaker turned actor Farhan Akhtar tweeted: "Has the telecast of The Dirty Picture actually been stopped?!! I'll believe it when I don't see it. #shame."
Director Karan Johar remarked: "A national award winning film cannot have a national telecast??? this is not an irony but plain and simple hypocrisy!!!! #dirtypicture.If the censorship is not a final authority then what is??? Complicated and blurred lines defeat the core of democracy!!!! #dirtypicture."
Actor-social commentator Suhel Seth posted on his Twitter homepage: "The telecast of The Dirty Picture has been stopped only so that the country doesn't get spoilt by beauty! Keep watching MLAs."
Tanuj Garg, CEO of Balaji Motion Pictures, tweeted: "The Dirty Picture trending.That's the point abt its popularity.The most discussed& celebrated National Award-winner is nt allowed 2telecast."
Reacting to the entire episode, Tusshar Kapoor tweeted: "Really unfortunate that after all the necessary cuts and a valid UA certificate, The Dirty Picture could not be telecast today on sony tv."
"Sad that inspite of being acclaimed for it's entertaining realism & having won 3 National Awards the regulatory forces have stalled the show," he posted.
A lawyer had filed a plea with the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court asking to impose a ban on the telecast of the film on Sony on the grounds that it contained obscene shots.
The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court had cleared the film after 58 cuts.
Viewers saw a small message streaming on the channel on Sunday that read: “For unavoidable reasons we regret to inform that the film 'The Dirty Picture’ will not be telecast today. Any inconvenience caused is deeply regretted.”
Vidya Balan was named the 'Best Actress' for her role of a celluloid sex siren in the film by the National Film Awards committee.
The film also featured Tusshar Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah and Emraan Hashmi in the lead roles.
The film was directed by Milan Luthria and was co-produced by Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor.
