IIFA: Sallu, Bips make up for missing stars

Colombo: Many of the top Bollywood stars have given it a miss after a Southern film body threatened to boycott northern stars attending the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards in Sri Lankan capital Colombo over the Tamil issue. But Salman Khan and Bipasha Basu among others glammed up the event beginning on Thursday.
The International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards lost some of the shine with many A-listers like Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan not attending the event after the South India Film Chamber of Commerce urged Bollywood to stay away in protest against the “genocide of innocent Tamilians by the Sri Lankan Army” .
However, actors like Salman Khan, who turned up at the event, said he has come to entertain and would go back after giving something to the people who are in trouble.
"That way you cannot go to Gujarat, Kashmir or even Afghanistan,” he told a TV channel.
According to reports in Sri Lankan media, the Bollywood personalities who arrived also included Sanjay Dutt, Bipasha Basu, Diya Mirza, Vivek Oberoi Anil Kapoor,
Sharman Joshi, Genelia D’Souza, Kailash Kher and Manish Malhotra.
IIFA promotes Indian film industry globally and institutes an award ceremony along with celebrations in foreign venues every year.
