Cyclone Tomas intensifies as it heads for Fiji

The Northern Islands Group in Fiji have begun to face the brunt of Cyclone Tomas since early this morning.
The cyclone is expected to intensify as it heads toward the island of Vanua Levu, the country's second biggest island group, as it moves at about 10 km an hour in the south-south west direction.
The cyclone is still developing and intensifying and there are fears it may grow into a category 4 or even a stronger category 5 cyclone.
Authorities have reported gale force winds of up to 140 kilometres per hour.
The acting director of the Fiji Disaster Management Office, Pajiliai Dobui, says since Thursday they have been warning people in the Central Division and the flood prone areas of Vanua Levu to move to higher ground, Radio New Zealand has reported.
