Battered Fiji launches food drive

December 16 2009
Fiji has launched one of its biggest food drives following the devastation caused by Cyclone Mick this week.
The cyclone, which caused widespread destruction on the main island Viti Levu, struck on Monday. Two people have been confirmed dead and thousands left homeless as a direct result of the cyclone’s destructive forces.
The food drive has been kicked off by one of the country's biggest companies, Telecom Fiji group.
"It's times like these that we have to rally together to support our fellow countrymen that have been affected in such a severe manner. It is our hope that we can contribute to them rebuilding their lives," Telecom Fiji’s acting chief executive Sakeasi Seru told the Fiji Times.
Telecom has nine centres on Viti Levu where employees, customers and other members of the public who wish to do so can drop off donated dry food goods.
The goods will be distributed with the help of the National Disaster Management Office (DISMAC) through their evacuation centres and via various district officers to affected families.
A Telecom statement said all individual food items would be bundled into family packs for distribution.
Cyclone Mick caused widespread damage to property and devastation to the lives of thousands of people across the Fiji group. Around 400 homes were estimated to have been destroyed with more than 3800 people in evacuation centres, as well as thousands more attempting to clean up their homes after flooding.
"In the spirit of Christmas, we are hoping to put a smile on someone's face this Christmas," Telecom Fiji said.
The food drive will continue throughout the week, with the first distribution of family packs to go out over the weekend.
Local Indian organizations based in New Zealand have also begun appeals for help for the victims of Cyclone Mick.
