Nurses Urged to Research Job Practices

THE Fiji Nursing Association (FNA) is encouraging the 2600 registered nurses nationwide to do more research on nursing practices for their own benefit.

In an interview during the association's scientific forum at Studio 6 Apartments in Suva on Friday, FNA general secretary Salanieta Matiavi said research was now more than necessary as their work was now evidence-based.

"We just want them to do research because if we want change in any nursing practice, we need evidence," Ms Matiavi said.

"This is a forum where more than 200 nurses from around the country have come together to present their research work about their profession and how they can improve their services to the people of Fiji.

"We are happy to see young nurses joining the forum and this is an indication of their eagerness to learn more in order to deliver their services well.

"While we continue to groom and train them, we also continue to encourage them to deliver quality services. However, issues such as lack of resources and facilities are some of the challenges nurses encounter on a daily basis.

"In order for them to deliver quality services, they need quality resources and a conducive environment to work in."

Ms Matiavi added the forum was also a platform to asses the nurses.

"This is a platform where we assess them (nurses) as part of their Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points. Each nurse needs to gain 20 points annually in order to become licensed to practice nursing."
