Lami Awarded for Climate Change Advocacy

The Lami Town Council was recently awarded first prize in a photo competition for its commitment towards climate change advocacy.
The council attended a meeting on ‘Cities in Climate Change Initiatives’ (CCCI) in Changwong, Korea where along with other countries presented on good practices of addressing climate change in their individual countries.
The winning photo was of used tyres being utilized at Tikaram Park for foreshore protection.
The Lami town council is the first Pacific island town/city to join the global campaign, which has been regionally adapted to “Making the Pacific Resilient – My community is getting ready!” .
The commitment was made this year in March to address issues of local governance and urban risk while focusing on previous International Strategy for Disaster Reduction awareness campaigns on safer schools and hospitals, as well as sustainable urbanization principles.
Special Administrator Lami, Mr Chandu Umaria said the CCCI is being piloted in Lami to enable the people of Lami to become more knowledgeable in Climate Change issues.
Only Lami from Fiji and Cairns in Australia were selected from the South Pacific for this pilot project.
Minister for Local Government, Urban Development, Housing and Environment, Colonel Samuela Saumatua said it is a big achievement for Fiji and the Lami council to be recognized globally.
“The photo depicted how the community is protecting their foreshore through the use of tyres as Lami is adversely affected with climate change evident in the Qauia river,” Col Saumatua said.
Lami was invited to share its success story in the Global Forum in Geneva, Switzerland in May 2011 and participated in Auckland, New Zealand Regional Platform in August being the only municipal council in the region to present its success story.
The campaign focuses on raising awareness of citizens and governments at all levels for the benefit of reducing urban risks, identify budget allocations within local government funding plans to invest in disaster risk reduction activities and include disaster risk reduction in participatory urban development planning processes to protect critical infrastructure.
Currently, Lami Town Council representative is attending the 2011 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Durban where it will share its success story to the world leaders.
