Teachers get in on Diwali spirit

Diwali came early to several schools in Lautoka, Nadi and Labasa when the New Zealand Association of Fiji Teachers recently donated $2000 towards the purchase of books, uniforms, equipment and payment of fees.
Jasper Williams High School, Ami Chandra Memorial School, Lomolomo Public Kindergarten, Shri Viveknanda High School, Raladamu School, Qawa Primary, Lagalaga Primary School and Daku Indian School, were the beneficiaries of the special assistance.
In addition to the above, the association donated $3000 in the past 12 months, the association’s publicity officer David Reddy said.
“Sadly, there is a growing need for help in meeting costs of educating children in the rural areas where land leases have expired and the urban squatter areas. The poorest of the poor live in these areas.
“Some families they can't afford decent lunches for their children and there are some schools are crying out for suitable reading books for their libraries,” Mr Reddy said.
“The association is planning to rectify these situations by providing lunches in some schools and will also embark on a project to collect books (both new and used) in New Zealand and send a container load to be distributed all around the country.”
Mr Reddy said the local scene was not forgotten; $1350 was donated to two schools affected by the earthquakes in Christchurch.
“Our plea to all the readers of this paper is: please make your Diwali this year complete by making a donation towards the associations cause to fight the evils of poverty and misfortune, causing such a desperate situation for some young families in our mother country.”

“Please remember "Revolution is festival of the oppressed.
“Finally the association sends its best wishes to those celebrating Diwali, may you have a blessed time with your family, friends and neighbours. Many thanks for your support with the fundraising.”
