Jaipur Foot bound for Fiji

The world famous “Jaipur Foot”, which has revolutionised lives of thousands of disabled across the world, is now going to help physically impaired people in Fiji.

A technical team of Bhagvan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti [BMVSS] left for the Fijian capital of Suva on Wednesday from Jaipur to fit amputees with Jaipur Foot.

The BMVSS team will equip around 300 amputees with the Jaipur foot. The team, led by Bhupendra Mehta, will hold an artificial limb rehabilitation camp in Suva from June 6 to July 1.

According to the BMVSS, in this camp artificial limbs including Jaipur Foot and Jaipur Knee, calipers and artificial hands would be fitted to about 300 people.

The six-member team includes Dr Pooja Mukul as medical head and Om Prakash Sharma as camp manager.

''What we learnt that the diabetes is the main cause of disability in the Island nation, Dr Mehta said.

He said a Fijian minister and other officials had visited the BMVSS office in Jaipur and took much interest in the artificial limb.

''The Fijian government had sent two of its technicians for training in manufacturing Jaipur Foot and it is expected that a camp will be set up in Suva to provide Jaipur Foot to amputees, Mr Mehta said.

The Fijian government sponsored such training and Dr Protima Singh of the Fiji Government would assist the camp in Suva.

''This will be a different camp because we are used to visit war-torn countries and conflict zone in the past, there nothing was available in organised manner, but in Suva, everything is organized,” Dr Mukul said.

“We will have a feed back and consistent touch with the beneficiaries,” said Dr Mukul, who also provided her services at a camp in war ravaged Iraq.

Dr Mehta said a large percentage of the Fijian population comprised the people of Indian origin and they were from Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pardesh.

''This camp would be symbolic of the goodwill between India and Fiji, Dr Mehta said.

BMVSS has conducted similar camps in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Bangladesh, Honduras, Papua New Guinea, Somalia, Lebanon and other countries. The BMVSS has so far fitted 19,378 amputees with Jaipur Foot overseas.

''I had been to all the such war ravaged countries or affected by violence, but in my view, Iraq was most dangerous, said a team member who served with the BMVSS camp in Baghdad .
''In Pakistan, we have two associate centres - one in Karachi and other one is in Islamabad, both centres fitted artificial limbs to 9000 disables in Pakistan, Dr Mehta said.

The BMVSS is the biggest organisation in the world having fitted 1.20 million artificial limbs so far in India and abroad. The BMVSS provides Jaipur Foot to the disabled.
