Fiji to have speed, light cameras from March

Suva: The Land Transport Authority in partnership with Telecom Fiji Limited is now in the process of testing the speed and red light camera on our roads with the aim to maintain safety and avoid accidents. ? ?
The LTA team at Grantham Road junction in three miles put up a trial test this morning. ? ?
LTA chief executive officer, Mr Naisa Tuinaceva said after a month of trials and awareness, the speed and red light cameras would be implemented in March this year. ? ?
“After the one month of testing and awareness phase, the actual implementation will start and we expect all motorists to follow the road rules at all times,” Mr Tuinaceva said. ? ?
“The enforcement of the speed and red light camera will begin on March 1,” he added. ? ?
Mr Tuinaceva said with the help of cameras, the nation would be able to curb accidents. ? ?
“We will be able to catch reckless drivers on our roads and they will be disciplined accordingly,” he said. ? ?
The LTA has so far put up two speed camera zone signboards along the Queens Highway. ? ?
Cameras will be mounted in Central Eastern Division first and later in the west and north. ? ?
Operations general manager, Mr Josefa Vosanibola said cameras would be put in black spot areas. ? ?
“These are frequent accident-prone areas so we are referring to the Queens Highway and Kings Road,” Mr Vosanibola said. ? ?
After the implementation, violators will be penalised with similar bookings made by radars. ? ?
The ultimate aim of the LTA is to make roads safe for everyone. ? ?
A total of 41 people died last year on the roads due to speeding alone.
